From screen time to play time
I knew that I had to act fast and help my son manage his interest in video games before it spiraled out of control. I sat down with him and discussed the risks associated with gaming addiction, but also emphasized the importance of setting limits for himself. We established a “no more than an hour per day” rule, and I made sure to hold him accountable for sticking to it. I also encouraged him to pursue other activities, such as sports and music, that he could use to channel his energy in a more productive manner.
To give my son some guidance on how to avoid falling into gaming addiction, we looked into various resources about the topic. We discussed how to create a healthier gaming environment by setting boundaries on the amount of time spent playing, limiting exposure to certain games and content, and avoiding any in-game purchases. My son studies in a top ranked schools in Gurgaon and we also reached out to his teachers for support.
Overall, this experience was an important reminder for me that it’s important to be aware of the risks associated with video games and to help our children find ways to manage their interests in a healthy way. By taking the time to have open conversations and providing resources, I was able to give my son the tools he needed to navigate this new territory safely.
My approach was to allow, but place boundaries. I felt that it is important to ensure that there are limits and conditions set when our son plays video games, so as to not make playing video games dominate his life. We decided together on the number of hours per week he could play, and also discussed with him how his school work should take precedence over his gaming. We also set rules about what type of games he could play and tried to ensure that he was not exposed to too much violence or mature themes in the games as well.
We both agreed that while it is important for our son to have some leisure time, it should be spent productively and on activities that help him grow and develop as a person. In order to that, we also encouraged other activities like reading, sports, learning a new instrument or taking up a hobby. By setting boundaries for video games, it allowed us to make sure that the game playing was balanced with more productive pursuits.
Ultimately, we wanted our son to understand the importance of maintaining a balance in life. We wanted him to have the freedom to explore and make his own choices, while at the same time understanding that there is more to life than just video games!
We continue to monitor our son’s gaming habits and adjust our rules as needed. Overall, we feel that by having an open dialogue with him and setting boundaries, we can help him find a healthy balance in life.
The presence of video games has certainly changed our lives, but by working together and making sure that everyone is on the same page, it has been manageable! We are now confident that our son will grow up with a good understanding of how to manage his own time and find the right balance between gaming and other activities.
This strategy seemed to work for us and our son. He respected the boundaries that were set, even if he occasionally pushed them from time to time. We found a balance between giving him enough freedom to explore his interests while still maintaining an appropriate limit of hours spent playing video games each week. It was a ‘push and pull’ balance that worked well for all of us. We were able to see the positive aspects of video game use — increased problem-solving skills, improved hand-eye coordination, and boosted self-confidence — while also safeguarding our son's overall health and wellbeing.
Ultimately, we found that regulation is not about taking things away from kids but instead helping to set boundaries around appropriate use. This middle path allowed us to find a balance that worked for everyone in our family and gave our son the opportunity to explore his interests with guidance and moderation.
